The NOCS Friday Seminar Programme
The NOCS Friday seminar progrannmme covers the full range of research activities undertaken at NOCS. Speakers include a large number of invited guests from the UK and abroad. Seminars are held weekly from October to June, from 4-5pm in the Henry Charnock Lecture Theatre of the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton.
For further details (or suggestions/volunteers for future seminars) please contact a member of the organising committee: Nick Harmon, Kate Larkin, Clive Trueman or Andrew Yool.
The Rhubarb Talks are a series of informal talks given and organised by postgraduates at the NOC. Seminars cover all aspects of ocean and earth sciences together with useful postgraduate advice. Talks are held every other Monday at 5pm in the PG lounge on level 6 (unless otherwise stated). For more info or to give a talk please contact Anna Lewis, Cristina Sghibartz or Davelyn Pastor.
WUN video-seminar series 2006/2007
This year’s series is the third annual running of this event and takes as its theme 'Climate Change Science: Towards an Earth System Context'. This theme is particularly topical as we anticipate publication of the Fourth Assessment Report of the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change). Working Group 1, covering “The Physical Basis of Climate Change”, will publish its report in May 2007. At the same time that climate change becomes an urgent issue, we are increasingly seeing the complexity of past climate change. This urges us to better understand ongoing and future climate change in an interdisciplinary earth system context. The seminars will highlight key links between human activity, the atmosphere, the cryosphere, the oceans and the carbon cycle. Speakers will address climate change over past millennia, over the historical/instrumental record, and as projected for the 21st century.
There are 11 talks in the 2006-07 series, generally held on the first Wednesday of each month (November through June), though we have tried to avoid the national holidays or major international meetings. Talks should be approximately 45 minutes long and allow for approximately 15 minutes of questions and discussions between the different audiences. The talks are live telecast to other WUN partner institutions in the UK, Norway, the Netherlands, USA and China.
Series convenors: Dr Bob Marsh (NOCS) and Prof. Michael Schlesinger (U. Illinois at Urbana-Champaign).
The NOCS Physical Oceanography and Climate Seminar Series
This seminar series, coordinated by the Ocean Observing and Climate (OOC) and Ocean Modelling and Forecasting (OMF) groups, caters for a mix of visiting and local speakers. Topics relate to the physics of the ocean and the climate system, and more broadly to any topics relevant to Ocean Circulation and Climate research. The NOCS POC seminars consist of 45 minutes talks followed by 10-15 minutes for Questions/Answers. Seminars are held on Wednesdays in the Henry Charnock Lecture Theatre, unless otherwise indicated.
Series Convenors: Eleanor Frajka-Williams, Penny Holliday, and Meric Srokosz
POETS corner provides a lively forum for informal talks and discussions. These may relate to work in progress, recent observations, theoretical developments, ideas for grant proposals...whatever. Historically, talks carried at least a thread of physical oceanography, and many still do. However, the aim of the series is to encourage cross- and multi-disciplinary work and so talks on any subject concerning oceanography are welcome, particularly on multi-disciplinary subjects. As the series is not funded the majority of speakers are internal. However, external speakers with their own travel funds seeking an informal venue are very welcome. Seminars are held on Thursdays at 14:00 hrs in room 074/02 unless stated otherwise. The name is an acronym of Processes, Observations, Experiments, Theories and Solutions.
Series Convenor: Adrian Martin.
Geology, Geophysics & Geochemistry Seminar Series
This series is organised by the Geology & Geophysics Group. There are normally about 50% internal speakers and 50% external, normally with a speaker from industry roughly once a term. The seminars are aimed primarily at undergraduate/MSc/PhD students and staff with an interest in all things GEO. Seminars take place at 1600 on Tuesdays during undergraduate term-time. Series Convenor: Marcus Gutjahr, Carla Sands
Palaeoceanography and Palaeoclimate Group
The 'Palaeo Critique' seminar series provides an opportunity for the review and discussion of current research papers in palaeoceanography and palaeoclimatology. Furthermore, informal seminars on current research topics involving staff and postgraduate students within the NOCS are also welcome.
Seminars are held in Room 074/02 on Wednesdays at 10.30-11.30 a.m, once every two weeks. If you would like to give a presentation, please contact either of the seminar conveners Adam Charles or Joe Stewart.
