Why Give?
The oceans are important. They are the cradle of life on Earth. They cover 70% of the Earth’s surface, contain 97% of the biosphere by volume and are a key component of the Earth’s climate system,
We use the oceans for food, energy and materials. They are the Earth’s principal solar heat store and regular day-to-day weather and longer-term climate. Life most likely began in the oceans, and most life never left.
From transportation to tourism, food and minerals to novel products and medicines, the oceans play a significant role in the human experience and our planet. Our understanding of the oceans—from biodiversity to climate change to geological hazards—all has an impact on our future.
With expertise in ocean observation, ancient and rapid climate change, natural hazards and biodiversity, NOCS scientists and students are well-poised to address our world’s greatest environmental challenges.

Private support makes the difference. Your gift to The National Oceanography Centre, Southampton (NOCS) will ensure that NOCS will have the resources to educate the next generation of scientists and continue to make important global scientific discoveries, all for the benefit of society.
