Information for schools & public

members of the public at Rockwatch

NOCS is host to a wide range of resources, opportunities and information for schools, teachers and the general public. We hold a number of open days through the year such as Rockwatch and Science Week, which provide opportunities for the public to visit NOCS, meet some of our scientists and find out more about our research. We also open our doors to the public once a month for the Marine Life talks, where scientists from NOCS and other local organisations share their research experiences and adventures. For details of all these events, please see our events page.

We are pleased to arrange visits for schools and colleges, particularly if your class is learning about marine science topics. However, please note that these visits must be arranged in advance. Please contact Simon Boxall.

For non-school related visits please contact Rob Curry.

Follow the links below to explore our resources, from online cruise diaries from our research ships, to multimedia teaching materials and activities that help teachers bring science to life in the classroom.

The Excitement of Science

The aim of The Excitement of Science is to demystify science amongst school students in the age range of 13-18 years, and encourage them to consider a career in science, technology and engineering. This year the theme will be oceanography, with the aim of collating and analysing data on the fresh meltwater from the shrinking Arctic polar ice cap.

Ambassador/Aim Higher scheme

Aim Higher is a national programme supported by the DfES which aims to widen participation in higher education by raising the aspirations and developing the abilities of young people across the UK. NOCS is an active participant in the scheme with Ocean and Earth Science students working along side teachers in primary, secondary and tertiary schools/colleges in the Southern region. Opportunities exist for our Ambassadors to bring their classroom into NOCS and onto the water to explore the environment at first hand.
