Commercial, industry partnerships and applied research

TOBI (Towed Ocean Bottom Instrument)

Collaboration with industry adds to the continued success of the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton (NOCS). All of our research groups are actively involved in industry partnerships and applied research. By working with the Centre's scientists you have access to:

  • new ideas and emerging technologies from a wide range of oceanographic and geological disciplines
  • a wealth of expert knowledge
  • specialised equipment
  • historic data collections and public-funded science results
  • links with other Natural Environment Research Council centres and the University of Southampton

Theme based research with commercial partners

Projects could range from the planning, design and execution of full ocean surveys through to providing expert scientific or technological advice during a few days consultancy.

The Centre also has a strong record of transferring technologies to companies, through collaborative projects and licensing opportunities, to bring innovative products to the market place. One example is the spin out from NOCS of OHM Ltd.

Exhibition delegates

We actively promote links between industry and research through conferences and exhibitions held at the Centre which bring people from industry into contact with our scientists. Major joint events include the annual Unmanned Underwater Vehicle Showcase (September) and the new biennial Ocean Business exhibition (March).

We are keen to work with businesses on the major government schemes to encourage and fund industry research links such as Knowledge Transfer Partnerships, DTI Technology Programme and NERC's Knowledge Transfer schemes

Through partnership projects with the Centre, businesses have access to a wide variety of facilities offered by the Centre, including:

Rough seas

The Centre already has strong links with a variety of businesses including offshore industries (oil, gas and communications), defence agencies, environmental technology companies and government agencies (UK and overseas) but we want to develop links with a whole range of commercial sectors to ensure that our science is relevant to business needs.
