A message from the lead scientist

Richard Lampitt, Lead scientist on the cruise says:

‘This is an exciting time for the Porcupine Abyssal Plain. After more than 20 years sampling at this deep-sea Northeast Atlantic site, NERC and the UK Met Office are joining forces to deploy a brand new ocean observatory. This means more environmental and climate data from the open ocean than ever before. For the first time we will have a weather station directly at the PAP site. The North Atlantic is a key region for the absorption of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere into the oceans. Meteorology and upper ocean measurements will allow us to understand more about exchanges between the atmosphere and oceans and how these are changing with climate change.’
